Selectiоn 1 Unаble tо get her finаnciаl aid cоnfirmed until the week before school started, Angie rushed to enroll in her college classes on the last day of registration. She arrived early, as soon as she dropped her daughter off at day care, but the lines were already long and the staff stressed. Hours later, hungry and tired, Angie had managed to register for only two of the classes she needed, and the times were inconvenient. Angie’s experience is not unique. Registration is a challenging time for most college students, and the process brings on a variety of problems. Scheduling provides many possibilities for frustration. Sometimes, classes are closed at the times when students need to take them. Two or more courses required for a specific program may conflict with each other, presenting students with a scheduling dilemma. Two required classes may be offered in buildings that are far apart, and there are often only ten minutes to get from one class to the next. Students who are late start off on the wrong foot with their professor on the first day of class. Some required classes are offered only when students must be at work. Registration lines are long, and students may have extensive waits to see an advisor. People are another source of registration problems. College personnel, who are supposed to be available to help, often do not know the answers to students’ questions, or they unwittingly convey inaccurate information. If a student needs a signature to override a class size limit, for example, more difficulties arise. The required professor is rarely found near the registration area. The student may fortuitously find the professor in a nearby building; however, the professor may not be on campus at all until classes begin. Friends, although they usually mean well, may provide unwise advice. Friends may claim to know the "easy" professors, or they may pressure students to take the same classes they are taking, regardless of major. Of course, some friends who have attended college for a time know about college requirements, but these requirements may not be the ones that a student needs to follow for his or her particular course of study. In some ways, technology has improved the situation. Still, computers are only as accurate as the operators who enter the data. Once a mistake is in the system, it will remain there until the information is corrected by a college employee. That correction may not happen until a student finds the error and then requests a correction, perhaps in the spelling of a last name or in the addition of the most recent telephone number. Another problem with computers is that they sometimes "go down." When that happens, the whole registration process comes to an abrupt halt. Students cannot register online, and advisors cannot register students who may have stood in line for hours. Also, if a hold is put on a student’s account for an unpaid parking ticket or an overdue library fine, the student cannot register until the hold has been removed. Furthermore, a student may find out about a hold on his account and travel to campus after work to solve the problem, only to find that the hold cannot be removed for another twenty-four hours. Telephone registration is another problem area. Although there are no physical lines, students may get a continuous busy signal when they phone the college. College registration problems are not new, although the nature of the problems has changed. Perhaps in a millennium, registration will be easier and less stressful. But until then, wise college students will persevere through registration problems to achieve their goal of a college degree.
