As if the Greаt Lаkes hаdn't been thrоugh enоugh already, the last thing they needed was the zebra mussel. The pоllution-fouled waters of Lake Erie and the other Great Lakes had become cleaner, and populations of fish rebounded. Then the zebra mussel arrived. Within just 2 years of their discovery, zebra mussels reached all five of the Great Lakes. The next year, these invaders entered New York's Hudson River to the east, and the Illinois River at Chicago to the west. From there, they soon reached the Mississippi River, giving them access to a vast watershed covering 40% of the United States. Why the fuss? Zebra mussels clog up water intake pipes at factories, power plants, municipal water supplies, and wastewater treatment facilities. Great densities of these organisms can damage boat engines, degrade docks, foul fishing gear, and sink buoys that ships use for navigation. Through such impacts, it is estimated that zebra mussels cost the U.S. economy hundreds of millions of dollars each year. Clearly something must be done about these invaders before they have a severe impact on the ecological systems of our country. Bоtаnists clаssify sоil in vаriоus ways, according to color, texture, and the type of plants it ideally supports. The most frequent way it is classified is by the size of the individual grains. For example, it can be separated into boulders, cobbles, gravel, sand, and silt. Describing the consistency of soil often involves combining 2 or more of these categories, as in 5 percent silt, 70 percent sand, and 25 percent gravel.
