INFORMATION Muhаmmаd Sаleem sells grоceries frоm his tuckshоp at home in a rural part of Umbumbulu. Today is exactly 3 years from when Muhammad started his business with R2 000 cash which he borrowed from his brother. His wife, Juwarriah, helps him at the business on days when he cannot be there.   Muhammad runs this business strictly on a cash basis – he pays cash for goods from suppliers and sells these to his customers for cash only. At the end of four months he was able to pay back the amount owing to his brother.   To pay for home expenses such as food, electricity, school transport for his two children, clothing for the family, entertainment and other sundry expenses, Muhammad gave R3 000 to his wife every month during the first twelve months. This monthly amount was increased to R4 000 in the second year and in the third year it was R5 000 per month. All this cash came from the business profits.   Muhammad generally sells his goods at double the amount he pays for them.   Two years ago, Muhammad bought a second-hand van for R28 000 cash and at the same time he employed his neighbour, Katlego, to help at the business. Katlego also has to pack and transport goods from the vehicle to the tuckshop. Katlego was paid R300 a week in the first year and R350 a week in the second year. Katlego works for 50 weeks each year.   Four months ago he employed another neighbour, Asandile, to work during the weekends and she gets paid R600 per month.   Muhammad pays the local garage for petrol, servicing and minor repairs to the vehicle. During the first year he paid a total of R9 600 and during the second year he paid R14 400.   As of today Muhammad has an amount of R78 500 in the bank and the cost price of his stock (goods) on hand is R19 700.
