Answer these questiоns оn а blаnk sheet оf pаper. When you are finished, hold your work up to your camera before submitting your quiz. Scan your work and upload it as a single pdf file. 1. (6 points)  The following synthetic transformation was desired by a synthetic organic chemist during the synthesis of potential drug candidates for prevention of cellular damage following an ischemic event. The most likely method for success in achieving the desired stereochemistry without causing adverse reactions with the other functional groups present was thought to be the use of an enzyme catalyzed reaction and the chemist turned to glycolysis for the possible required enzyme. What enzyme of glycolysis was used and what was the second substrate for the reaction? To answer this question, think what bond(s) are being broken or formed in going from reactant to product. What enzyme of glycolysis is able to perform similar bond breaking/forming reactions?      2. (5 points) Glycolysis can be inhibited by the molecule 2-deoxyglucose (2DG) which is basically a molecule of glucose where C2 has been reduced such that the hydroxyl group is replaced with a hydrogen. While 2DG can serve as a substrate for hexokinase, the resulting product reacts with phosphohexose isomerase, producing a molecule that binds with high affinity to the active site, thus resulting in inhibition of the enzyme. Using your knowledge of the mechanism of phosphohexose isomerase, show what the molecule that inhibits the enzyme is. Explain why it binds with such high affinity and why it cannot be converted to the typical product of the enzyme   3. (6 points) Remember that if glucose-6-phosphate enters the pentose phosphate pathway solely for the production of NADPH, the carbon reenters glycolysis as fructose-6-phosphate or glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate. Let's consider 3 molecules of glucose-6-phosphate all of which are labeled at C4. If these three molecules enter the PPP, which carbon of the pentose phosphates is labeled? Which carbons of sedoheptulose-7-phosphate and erythrose-4-phosphate are labeled? Where does the label end up in fructose-6-phosphate and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate? You must account for all 3 labeled carbons.   Immediately before submitting your quiz, you must show your answers to the camera for documentation. What you show to the camera must match exactly with what you submit for grading. Hold your paper about 12 inches from the camera and slowly move your paper to capture the entire page. If you have multiple pages, make sure to show all pages in the proper order. Please only show your work and answers for the short answer questions, do not show any scratch work for the multiple choice section. If you do not show your short answer work to the camera as the last thing you do prior to submitting the quiz, you will not receive credit for your short answer work.  Submit your short answer portion within 10 minutes of your quiz submission.
