Mаculаr degenerаtiоn results in a lоss оf central vision that may be acute or progressive. Macular degeneration is typically a disease of older patients and is the most common cause of permanent vision loss in this population. There is a white, female predominance. Family history and cigarette smoking are also risk factors. Age-related macular degeneration may be classified as either atrophic (“dry”) or neovascular (“wet”). Both types are progressive and usually bilateral. However, dry macular generation is usually moderate in severity, and related to the atrophy and degeneration of the outer retina and retinal pigment epithelium. In contrast, wet macular degeneration typically causes more severe and rapid vision loss, as it is due to the accumulation of serous fluid, fibrosis, and hemorrhage that occur when choroidal new vessels form between the retinal pigment epithelium and Bruch membrane. Treatment depends on the type of macular degeneration. There is no specific treatment for dry macular degeneration; low vision aids should be recommended when necessary.
