Tools of the Mind ("Tools") is a curriculum that aims to promote children's executive function (EF) and theory of mind (ToM) development and to lead to improvements in children's language, academic, and social-emotional outcomes.  This curriculum has yet to be tested for students with special needs.  Your research team is interested in studying the Tools curriculum for students who have previously been reported to have difficulties in the areas of EF and ToM, namely children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and those who are Deaf/Hard of Hearing (DHH).  Your study aims to understand if students with ASD and DHH who receive the Tools curriculum in addition to their regular academic programs show an increase in vocabulary, math, and pretend-play skills.  Some Definitions:  Executive function (EF) is a set of mental self-regulation skills including working memory, cognitive flexibility and self-control/attentional control.   Theory of mind (ToM) is the ability to attribute mental states to ourselves and others, serving as one of the foundational elements for social interaction.  Developmental research supports the notion that children's theory of mind development helps children to understand the social world and to predict and interpret the behavior of others. Curriculum:  The Tools curriculum is designed as a classroom-wide program.  Your team will implement the 6-month curriculum to two groups of students who are enrolled in preschool classrooms. For students enrolled in the study, the Tools curriculum content will be integrated with regular academic instruction using special set of research-based activities. Instructional strategies used in Tools include child-directed activities, teacher-directed activities and collaborative partner activities.  The thoughtful combination of instructional strategy with the activity is designed to support self-regulation development and allow individualized instruction in academic skills.   Design:  The study aims to conduct the Tools program for 40 4-5 year-old children in preschool.  Two groups of 20 students will be enrolled in the program: 20 children with ASD and 20 children who are DHH.  All 40 students will get the Tools intervention.  Students with ASD will be recruited from four different classrooms at the Keller PreK program in Yonkers and Rockland.  Students who are DHH will be recruited from four different classrooms at St. Francis de Sales School for the Deaf.  Students enrolled in the Tools program will receive the curriculum in addition to their regular academic programming at school during unstructured periods of the school day.   Children's vocabulary, math, and pretend-play skills will be measured prior to the start of the intervention  (pre-test) and at the end of the 6 month program (post-test).  What is the definition of external validity for this study? What is the definition of internal validity for this study? Using this study as the context, explain the following three threats to internal validity. For each threat, provide its definition and apply it to this specific study example:  a)  Selection,  b)  Maturation,  c) History What is one recommended change to be made to the researcher’s design that you would suggest to help the researcher to overcome the greatest number of the above-mentioned threats to internal validity? You have been hired by this research team to design and conduct a study that will explicitly address their research aims. Using the key components identified in Gersten et al. (2005), identify what you believe are three  critical quality indicators of high quality research that need to be considered for the study design. For each one, describe the indicator within the context of this example and explain why you believe that indicator is so important. Given your very limited budget, you cannot afford to measure too many things in this study. Note that the study team plans to measure intensity of intervention (# of sessions completed) and treatment fidelity of the delivery of the Tools intervention (i.e., blind ratings of curricular material delivered per session).  Aside from measures of the intervention itself, what are three key independent variables the team should measure to be studied? For each one, describe how you will measure that variable (and why), and describe the scale of measurement for that variable.  Do not include intervention as one of the three independent variables. Next, identify three key dependent variables for your study. For each one, describe how you will measure that variable (and why), and describe the scale of measurement for that variable. Pick one dependent variable and describe one approach to assessing the measure's validity and reliability (just one of each).  Hint: describe the validity/reliability in the context of this particular measure. State three different testable research questions for your study that accurately address the aims of the study. Be sure to incorporate the above-mentioned independent and dependent variables in your research questions (state the variable/measure explicitly in your questions). Based on the work of Charman (2004), Jarrold and Brock (2004), and Seltzer et al. (2004), what might be three potential confounding factors in this study that may influence your findings? On what characteristic would you consider matching the ASD and DHH groups and why? Imagine if another study found that students' SES (family income) moderates the association between the intensity of the intervention (# of sessions the student completed) and their pretend play skills.  Define the term "moderates" as it is used here. Imagine if another study found that children's working memory is a mediator of the association between the intensity of the intervention (# of lessons they received) and their math skills.  Define the term "mediates" as it is used here.
