Essаys (Chооse Twо) Using content covered in clаss from one or more of these sources, Excerpts we reаd of Lewis’s essay “Myth Become Fact” Excerpts we read from Lewis’s book Miracles and/or the video we watched of Lewis’s and Tolkien’s discussion of myth as fact explain why mythology was significant in Lewis’s conversion experience and why mythology is important in his imaginative writing. Specifically describe two scenes in the Narnia books you have read so far or The Great Divorce that involve mythology and discuss their literary and theological significance. 2. Specifically discuss one-two concepts or passages in Mere Christianity that are evident in two other books we have read by Lewis so far this semester. Explain the meaning of the passage and offer thoughtful insight about how Lewis illustrates it in two other titles we have read so far this semester. 3. Discuss Lewis’s illustration of Hell and Heaven, both the setting of it and its connection to human free will in The Great Divorce with additional support from either Mere Christianity or The Screwtape Letters. Draw from specific scenes and images or passages to support your answer. (You may draw from the Narnia series as well if you wish. 4. (A) Aslan is described as “not safe but good.” Explore what Lewis means by “good” in Aslan’s character, and why and how he is sometimes “not safe” or “untamed.” How does Aslan nurture “good” in two other characters in Narnia? Consider if they resonate with Aslan’s “unsafe” or “untamed” goodness. (B) Explore how Lewis illustrates evil or non-good in any of the Lewis works we have read so far this semester and how it contrasts the “good” you just explored. Discuss Screwtape’s character (which may include his treatment of his nephew) and his view of humanity and God. Drawing from specific passages or ideas, what major strategies does Screwtape use to tempt the patient away from God (discuss two)? Why might these temptations have failed? Thoughtful and thorough answers receive the best scores. Please do not generalize content but specifically discuss passages, ideas, scenes, and images and their significance.
