MEN’S HEALTH PROJECT Men’s Health Project was established by concerned health professionals, community members in various sectors and men’s organizations and individuals. It began as a lobbying activity to government to establish policies that will provide health services for men encourage and support men to access these services in order to maintain and improve their health. The initiative received unexpectedly high support from funding organizations, civil society, churches, youth clubs and health promoting institutions nationally and internationally. The support came in different forms such as finances, offices for operation, volunteer editors for their magazine, free advertising spaces in other magazines and websites. The project grew from a mere 8 volunteers to 65 staff spread throughout the country – both professional and non-professional staff. It has operated over 10 years with a budget of above 15 million dollars. These stakeholders had observed that men do not engage health services across the care cascade, resulting in adverse clinical outcomes for many preventable illnesses. They were also concerned that South African men generally have poor health seeking behaviours and are less likely than women are. They had noted that the health system misses key opportunities to engage with men who do seek services by not offering comprehensive and integrated services to those men who access services for specific conditions. The main aim is to create awareness among men and boys of access to Basic service package, and to promote health in Sexual and Reproductive Health, Communicable diseases, and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Among many of their activities, (a) lobbying for policy development and provision of basic service package for men; (b) creating awareness through production and distribution of the Men’s Health magazine, (c) education on sexuality and prevention of STIs and other diseases, are the main activities. The intention was to reach 10 000 men and 5 000 boys below the age of 18 years each year through the magazine and other outreach activities, government to put in place a policy by 2025, increase access to public health services by 50% (government records were indicating that only 32 500 men and boys were voluntary accessing health services, educate about 5 000 men and boys in prevention of STIs and other diseases by 2020, and produce monthly magazines. Reports indicate that government has introduced the South African national integrated men’s health strategy 2020- 2025 which aims to deliver a comprehensive and integrated package of care for men and boys across the life course; and that set targets of the project were met in time and in full. 10 MARKS) Use the Men’s health program to answer the following questions: Question 1a: Explain the need and the process of monitoring this program.
