This disease commonly occurs as a result of bone loss and deterioration of bone structure as people age but can also be due to a lifelong lack of calcium. Low calcium intake contributes to diminished bone density, early bone loss and an increased risk of fractures. Women tend to be more prone to the disease due to decreasing levels of oestrogen in their bodies as they age.
