Yоu аre аn Americаn student living abrоad in a cоuntry named Rodeo. In your free time you work for a sports law firm and agency. Due to your vast knowledge of American labor-management relations the firm hired you on the spot. Senator Wolfson wants you to help him create a bill that helps professional athletes in Rodeo. The Lincoln Lifters are a major basketball team within the state of Lincoln, which is located in the country of Rodeo. It is a very small county. There are two basketball leagues within Rodeo, a major and minor league. The major league is called the Rodeo Major League, and the minor league is called the National Minor League. Rodeo does not have any player’s association, nor does it allow any unions within the county. Ryan Wolfson is a senator within Rodeo, and he wants to change how sports are organized within his country. He is working on legislation for better contracts, governance, and labor management for Rodeo’s professional athletes. Due to Rodeo’s small size, he thinks he can win the support of many of his constituents. Senator Wolfson spends most of his time trying to convince the team owners of both leagues that this change needs to happen. The Lincoln Lifters finished the season as the national championship team in the Rodeo, with the MVP being Lad Sweets. After ending a wonderful season, Lad wants to move to the United States for two reasons. The first reason is that he wants more money, and the second reason is that Lad’s wife will attend medical school in Alabama. Lad wants to use a salary increase to pay for his wife’s medical education while playing basketball in the States. The owner of the Lincoln Lifters and Lad met the day after the championship game to discuss Lad's decision. The owner refused to increase Lad's salary, and he would not allow him to terminate his contract with the Lifters. The week after the championship game, Rodeo's major newspapers and publications speculated that Lad would leave the Lincoln Lifters to play in the United States. When Senator Wolfson read the reports, he contacted Lad to see if the newspapers were true, but only reached Lad’s voicemail. When Lad saw the headlines, he quickly scheduled an appointment with the commissioner of the Rodeo Major League, Commissioner Gray, to discuss his decision. During the meeting, Commissioner Gray informed Lad that he contracted to play for the Lincoln Lifters for as long as he was needed. Lad requested a copy of his contract and he read the following provision “By signing this agreement, Player contracts to the play for the Lincoln Lifters for as long as the team needs him.” Lad walks away feeling trapped and disappointed. He tells his husband about the meeting and then realized he has an unchecked voicemail. Lad called Senator Wolfson after hearing his message. The very next day Senator Wolfson and Lad meet. Lad tells Senator Wolfson everything that happened during his meeting with Commissioner Gray. Senator Wolfson tells Lad that he is working on a bill that should end these types of agreements in Rodeo. Lad wants to know more because he would be willing to stay in Rodeo if he could get more money. Based on what has been discussed in the course about labor relations and player mobility, discuss what Senator Wolfson will likely explain to Lad about any legislation that would improve labor rights for Rodeo’s professional athletes, who are currently not unionized? If Senator Wolfson is successful in passing the legislation that affords Rodeo’s professional athletes labor rights comparable to what American professional athletes have, discuss the processes could Lad use to resolve any potential dispute with the Lifters or the League?
