This questiоn fоllоws the inheritаnce of аn аutosomal dominant disease that causes progressive degeneration of the brain over time leading to cognitive and movement deficits. Individuals with the disease typically start noticing symptoms as early as age 30 and as late as age 50. Although there are treatments to lessen the severity of the symptoms, there is no known cure, and deterioration continues eventually leading to death. The mutation responsible for the disease occurs in a single gene called the Huntingtin (HTT) gene, which has two alleles H and h. The disease is considered rare but does occur.  A couple (Taylor and Anika) is considering having kids but want to be tested to see if they are likely to develop Huntington’s as they get older. They are also concerned about whether they will pass it on to their children. Taylor’s biological sex is male, and Anika’s biological sex is female. Below is the information about both Taylor and Anika’s family histories with Huntington’s disease. Taylor’s Family History Taylor’s paternal grandfather developed Huntington’s around age 40 and lived to be 61 years old. Later in his life, he had genetic testing done and learned that he was homozygous for Huntington’s. Taylor’s paternal grandmother did not develop Huntington’s disease and is living a long heathy life. Both Taylor’s dad and uncle (dad’s brother) started developing symptoms of Huntington’s disease over the last two years. Taylor’s mom is 53 and does not have any signs of Hutnington’s. Neither of Taylor’s maternal grandparents developed Huntington’s, so Taylor’s mom is pretty confident that she does not have the disease. Taylor is only 24, so they do not know if they have Huntington’s or not. They have not experienced any symptoms yet.   Anika’s Family History Anika and her sister are full siblings, but they were adopted, so they do not know if their parents had Huntington’s. Anika has one sister. Unfortunately, Anika’s older sister (age 37) was recently diagnosed with Huntington’s. Anika is 26 and has not expressed any symptoms yet. When her sister was diagnosed, she was scared she would also develop Huntington’s, so she had her genes test. She is unaffected by the disease.
