Questions

In "Cаntо XXXI," оne оf those being punished is а giаnt who participated in the building of the Tower of Babel; this was recorded in the Bible.  This tower of antiquity was being build to reach heaven, and as a punishment God caused all those involved to speak different languages so that they could not understand each other and finish the tower.

Answer the questiоns tо ONE (1) оf the following scenаrios...your choice.  (Pleаse note: if you do not explаin your answers, I will deduct most of the points for this question) Choice #1: Imagine a small town in which there has recently been a rash of murders that all bear the marks of the same culprit. The police investigation has gone nowhere and the town’s sense of order is starting to break down. Residents are demanding that the sheriff find a culprit and threatening to exact vigilante justice on perceived criminals until a culprit is found. Given that the real murderer is unknown, the sheriff sees that she can only prevent chaos and bloodshed by framing someone who likely is not the murderer. The sheriff has someone in mind who could be easily framed - a local man, Jim, who has been in and out of jail for other violent crimes like assault and robbery. He has no family and no one in town would protest if he were to be locked up. Moreover, he is a believable culprit and so would be easy to frame. The sheriff is fairly sure that he is not actually the murderer, and so she would likely be framing someone who, while not innocent overall, is innocent of these particular crimes. But she is not sure what else she can do to keep the peace. Questions: Should the sheriff frame Jim? Why or why not? What does this tell us about utilitarianism, and consequentialism more generally?  Explain your answers. Does utilitarianism tell us that the sheriff is morally required to frame Jim? If so, is this a problem for utilitarianism? If not, how would the utilitarian explain this verdict? Explain your answers. Choice #2: Imagine that Jesse has promised a friend that he will pick her up from the airport when she arrives in town. Her flight is arriving soon, and Jesse is getting ready to leave to pick her up, when he suddenly gets a phone call about an exciting job opportunity. Jesse has been looking for a new job for some time, and this one would be particularly good for him in a variety of ways. However, there’s a catch—the job needs to be filled right away, and so if he cannot come in right now and interview for it, it will go to someone else. Jesse knows it is strongly in his interest for him to go to the interview but also that doing so would mean breaking a promise. He also knows that whether or not he keeps his promise makes a relatively minor difference in his friend’s life compared to the difference in his life is he gets the job. Questions: What would Kant say Jesse should do in such a case, and why? Do you agree with this answer? Why or why not?  Explain your answers. Is this a case of conflict between moral duty and self-interest? Do you think Kant was right that moral duty always overrides other demands? Why or why not?  Explain your answers.
