Selectiоn 3 Our nаtiоnаl pаrks, sоme of our most precious natural resources, are rapidly disappearing. The hundreds of thousands of tourists who visit them each year are loving these masterpieces of nature to death. Rangers, in addition to their traditional job preparation, must now be trained in law enforcement in order to deal with the increasing number of crimes committed at the parks. Officials representing these wilderness sites report frequent offenses against other visitors, as well as against the parks’ facilities. Specifically, these crimes involve theft, vandalism, and even armed robbery. In response to this problem, Yosemite, ironically, was forced to build a cage (jail) for unruly visitors, not the park animals. Cars, trucks, and recreational vehicles, in ever increasing numbers, form lengthy queues at park entrance stations. The overcrowding of our parks has resulted in horrendous mountains of pollution and litter. Many services, including gas stations, hotels, groceries, restaurants, garbage collection agencies, and medical facilities, must be provided for the numerous visitors at each of these national parks. To provide these amenities, the National Park Service must clear more land and build additional roads. These formerly pristine regions are rapidly taking on the appearance of overgrown cities, and, in this process, we are destroying these cherished and aesthetic gifts of nature.
