[BLANK-1] оccurred in the fоurteenth century аnd wаs а periоd of about a century of global cooling. This came upon the heels of a period of global warming that had affected the world for about 300 years, which had allowed for nearly ideal harvests in Europe and allowed for agriculture in areas that had traditionally been too cold to yield harvests. Europe’s population had thus expanded tremendously, setting the stage for a Malthusian Crisis in the early fourteenth century where the population had outpaced the production of food. When this period of global cooling hit, harvests were poor and massive starvation occurred, leading to the Great Famine of 1315-1317. Those who did not die of starvation lacked the food and nutrition to fight off disease (worsening the death rates when the Bubonic Plague hit Europe later in the century) and were forced to eat grains that would usually have been discarded (like those affected by ergot fungus). It was around this time that myths of werewolves began to circulate in France – historians theorize that the werewolf scare was related to the consumption of ergot-tainted grains, which cause a hallucinatory effect similar to LSD and which is most potent in the ergot fungus around the time of the full moon.
