The mare was found rolling and unwilling to stand at her 6 a.m. feeding. Upon finding the horse, the owner haltered and walked the mare for 20 minutes. After exercise, the mare still appeared uncomfortable as evidenced by repeated attempts to lay down and roll, kicking at the abdomen, looking at the abdomen, and refusing to eat grain or hay. The mare was immediately transported to your clinic. Physical examination revealed: TPR 101.2 °F, 62 bpm, 40 bpm. CRT 3 seconds, mucous membranes very dark. A large amount of sweat was noted over the neck and shoulder area. Thoracic auscultation was within normal limits; however, abdominal auscultation demonstrated a lack of gut sounds. Digital pulses were not palpable.   Xylazine was administered to sedate the mare prior to rectal palpation, nasogastric intubation and abdominocentesis. Results of the examination / tests were as follows: Rectal palpation: Distended loops of small intestine.   Nasogastric intubation: Significant quantity (1.5 gallons) of gastric reflux. Abdominocentesis: Color pale clear yellow, total protein 1 g/dl, specific gravity 1.012, no WBC or RBC. https://online.vitalsource.com/ https://login.vitalsource.com/ https://www.merckvetmanual.com/
