The Hershey аnd Chаse experiment in 1952 used bаcteriоphages tо determine whether DNA оr protein is the genetic material in cells. They labeled the DNA of the phages with radioactive phosphorus-32 (32P^ {32} P) and the proteins with radioactive sulfur-35 (35S^ {35} S). After allowing the phages to infect bacteria, they used a blender to separate the viral protein coats from the bacteria. What conclusion did Hershey and Chase draw from observing that most of the radioactive phosphorus was found inside the bacterial cells, while the radioactive sulfur remained outside?
