Emily Dickinsоn аnd Wаlt Whitmаn are cоnsidered the first truly American Pоets. In most literary canons, they are grouped together because they are somewhat considered the "parents" of "American" poetry. Structurally, their works didn't strictly follow the traditional patterns that were associated with poetry. Whitman introduced us to the "free verse" form of poetry. Although Dickinson did follow many of the traditional poetry patterns, she "rebelled" so to speak by not following rules of capitalization, punctuation, giving poems titles, and other things of that magnitude. One major difference between these two writers is the lens through which they viewed the world and how that view is seen in their poetry. Dickinson viewed the world from a place of Isolation, whereas, Whitman viewed the world from a standpoint of Inclusion. Your assignment: Consider the following quote: "Emily Dickinson and Walt Whitman wrote on the same topics and themes of romanticism, but they had very different views. Emily Dickinson was put away by society, so she cut herself off completely from the unjust and stark society. Walt Whitman on the other hand loved how diverse society and how anyone has the freedom to choose their path." Assignment: Using the assigned readings, support (show or prove) the quote. You should address each poet in at least one paragraph (at least 5 sentences) and you must use at least 2 quotes from each poet. The quotes can but do not have to come from the same poems, but they must come from assigned poems. (You will have two paragraphs in all.) Example: For clarification, use Dickinson's poems to show the ideas of "isolation" and "put away by society". Use Whitman's poems to reflect the ideas of "inclusion" and appreciation for diversity. For example, one way to prove Dickinson's idea of isolation is to use and discuss the quote from the poem "The Soul Selects..." The Soul selects her own Society —chooses who she lets into her world. Then — shuts the Door —doesn't allow anyone else to enter To her divine Majority —to society, general public, etc) Present no more — is no longer available to them To support the claim about Whitman and idea of inclusion and appreciation of diversity, you can use the following quote: "I hear America singing, the varied carols I hear..." and "Singing with open mouths their strong melodious songs." He has described the voice of America (people) as having a "varied" song (different people bring a different voice. The songs they are singing are "melodious". This suggests that all of the people, though different, come together beautifully (melodious).
