“Rаge, rаge аgainst the dying оf the light.”
T.S. Eliоt’s оbservаtiоn thаt “Humаnkind cannot bear very much reality” can serve as a credo for many 20th century authors, who develop themes of painful DISILLUSIONMENT in various ways. In a carefully organized, well supported essay, discuss the CAUSES and IMPLICATIONS (i.e., the thematic significance) of such disillusionment as well as the “reality” that is so hard to bear. Discussion should focus on three of the following works, discussed in whatever order you please: James Joyce, “Araby”; T. S. Eliot, “The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock”; Joseph Conrad, Heart of Darkness; Yeats, “The Second Coming.” Support your ideas with specifics from the texts; avoid merely summarizing the plots. Develop your ideas using specific evidence to back up your views. Be SURE that each paragraph is focused specifically on the topic and is adequately developed with as much specific detail from the works as you can provide. Include an introduction sentence, or thesis, followed by three adequately developed and supported body paragraphs. Use terminology you have learned in this class. And, be sure that each body paragraph relates directly to your thesis.
