One brаnch оf the Anаbаptists (a Christian grоup dating tо the reformation) is the Hutterite sect, which was founded by Jacob Hutter in 1527. Since the death of Hutter in 1536, the beliefs of the Hutterites, especially those espousing a community of goods and nonresistance, have resulted in hundreds of years of diaspora in many countries. Today, almost all Hutterites live in Canada and the upper Great Plains of the United States. Around 1883, approximately 443 Hutterites founded three colonies (communal farms) in the United States. These communities now number over 40,000 with few outside individuals joining these groups in the intervening years. With a healthy lifestyle revolving around agriculture, the hard-working and law-abiding Hutterites unfortunately suffer disproportionately from the rare recessive genetic disorder of Bowen Hutterite syndrome. This disorder is characterized by growth delays and developmental challenges for the children who have it. What evolutionary explanation is there for why the Hutterites may suffer from this genetic disorder? Image below shows Bowen-Conradi Hutterite syndrome effects on hand structure. *Note image is not essential for the answering of this question.
