A blооd sаmple frоm а pаtient under treatment for HIV infection was submitted for testing. A laboratory test for the presence of HIV by qPCR was performed. The test can detect 50 to 1,000,000 viral copies per mL of plasma. Previous results had shown the presence of the virus at levels of 1,500, 600, 500, 220 and 100 copies per mL during the course of treatment. The results of the qPCR test for the current specimen were negative however the internal amplification control for the qPCR test was also negative when the control should be positive.
