On August 5, 2015, cоntrаctоrs аccidentаlly damaged a mine tailings cоntainment system at the Gold King Mine, causing contaminated water to spill into into Cement Creek, a tributary of the Animas River. Three million gallons of acidic mine water contaminated with toxic transition metals & metalloids including lead and arsenic travelled along Animas, San Juan, and Colorado Rivers. Communities in AZ, CO, NM, UT and the Navajo Nation rely on the water from these rivers for drinking, cattle, and crop irrigation. What processes would you predict to contribute to the contaminant fate in the water and sediment? Include reactions with surfaces and with aqueous species in solution. Name specific mechanisms and/or reactants whenever possible. Your answer must be specific to the contaminants present: lead, arsenic, and assorted acids (mainly sulfuric acid - why?).
