Yоu mаy use yоur textbоok for this portion of the exаm. Essаy (4–5 paragraphs minimum, 20 points) Choose one of the following to answer. If you answer more than one, only the first response will be graded. Be sure to use examples from the text to support your argument. Explore Donne's treatment of the spiritual and physical by analyzing at least three conceits in his poetry. Discuss how Donne presents the relationship between what is earthly (i.e., of man) and what is conceptual (i.e., emotion and faith). You should begin your essay with a brief but thorough explanation of conceits in general. Analyze Milton's view of free will in Areopagitica and Paradise Lost. Begin with a description of how you believe Milton would explain this concept. In your discussion, say whether you think his arguments in Areopagitica can be applied to Paradise Lost. Do you think his view is consistent throughout his work? Include a close analysis of the temptation scene in Book 9 to apply your argument. Make an argument for why Satan is or is not an epic hero in Paradise Lost. Consider specifically how his long speeches reflect his character's development. Does he seem to equivocate about moral decisions, or is he singular and focused in his villainy? Think about his story from an objective viewpoint, especially considering that he achieves his goal. Your analysis should include a thorough definition of epic hero. Using Dryden's definition of satire, discuss how the work of one of the following writers fits into that category: Pope, Swift, or Rochester. You should include in your discussion first an analysis of Dryden's definition, and then two important aspects of the works: what exactly is being criticized and how, and the author's true attitudes toward the subject as evidenced in the work. Using Milton's Paradise Lost as an example of epic, demonstrate how The Rape of the Lock is a mock-epic. You should consider characters, subject, themes, and language in your discussion. How does Pope's work overturn and/or parody the traditional use of each? Compare and contrast the imagery of civilization in "Autumn" and "Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard." Your discussion should focus on passages that address various aspects of city life, politics, or social obligation. How does each poet use these image to enhance our understanding of the purifying effect of nature? Compare the attitudes toward liberty in the writings of three of the authors in the second half of the course. You may consider: the social and cultural contexts of authors' works, the genre of the works, the authors' particular circumstances, and the authors' attitudes toward the world in which they live. Think also about particular aspects of each author's concept of freedom, including things like religion, man and nature, politics, and romantic love. Analyze the importance of the narrator's perspective in Gulliver's Travels to the reader's experience of the narrative. First, describe Gulliver's character. What kind of person is he? Then, using multiple examples, discuss how Gulliver affects the reader's view of the characters and events in the book. Do you think he helps us understand human nature better, or is his perspective problematic to our comprehension of Swift's satire?
