He was not informed beforehand that they would do this and consequently did not consent to it. The use of Dave's cells enabled the medical researchers to develop breakthroughs in treating his rare cancer. These new treatments saved the lives of others who had the same cancer. The researchers involved in Dave's treatment were the only ones who knew that Dave did not consent to having his cells taken and included in research.
