Last night, my husband made me love him more than ever. We were sitting out on the porch with a couple of friends, enjoying the cool breeze of the evening. While eating a piece of melon for dessert, I laughed at something my friend said, and suddenly the fruit stuck in my windpipe, entirely blocking any air. I tried to swallow hard and dislodge it, but it didn’t move. When I tried taking a deep breath, I couldn’t get one. Fortunately, my husband, seated across the table from me, saw that something was wrong and asked me if I needed help. Close to panic, I nodded yes. My eyes were filled with tears, and I could hear the blood pounding in my ears. I thought, briefly, I could die. My husband ran in behind me, pulled me up, and placed his arms around me. My heart was really beating hard by this time, and I was panicky. He jerked his fists firmly into my body, under my rib cage. The melon flew out of my mouth. I breathed in precious air and hugged my husband for a long time, half laughing, half crying. It’s a good thing we both took that course last month at the community center about what to do when someone is choking. We never imagined it would come in handy so soon after learning the technique. For a while, at least, I’ll try to remember that I owe him my life and not get irritated when he forgets to do something. (Real Writing with Readings,3rd Ed.
