Using two short stories from the unit we just studied, analyze a similar theme from each of the short stories. Choices might include the following: How family ties can strengthen or weaken family members in “Where are you Going? Where Have you Been” and “A Pair of Tickets.” How pride can cause literal or figurative death in “The Cask of Amontillado” and “The Birth-Mark.” The importance or non-importance of race in “Recitatitif” and “A Pair of Tickets.” There are numerous choices. Those are just suggestions. Avoid plot summary.   Some short stories seem to advocate changes in social or political attitudes or in traditions. Choose such a novel or play and note briefly the particular attitudes or traditions that the author apparently wishes to modify. Then analyze the techniques the author uses to influence the reader’s or audience’s views. Avoid plot summary.  Choose a character from one of the short stories (not necessarily the protagonist) whose mind is pulled in conflicting directions by two compelling desires, ambitions, obligations, or influences. Then, in a well-organized essay, identify each of the two conflicting forces and explain how this conflict with one character illuminates the meaning of the work as a whole. Avoid plot summary.
