In terms оf sex аnd gender, the definitiоn оf "mаrriаge" and "family" matter because they have historically reified a sex and gender dichotomy and the heterosexual matrix. If our laws and social policies reflected a heterosexual matrix, they in effect, privileged some bodies and identities over others and reasserted a rigid sex/gender system. Because many religious institutions will not perform same-sex marriages (nor are they required to do so under the U.S. constitution), some argue these institutions continue to affirm a belief in a gender binary and that to be "properly gendered" people must be straight. As much of our discussion this term has illustrated, sex and gender is much more fluid than this.
