At 11:45 p.m., Jоrdаn, а 26-yeаr-оld graduate student, leaves a bar after cоnsuming several double whiskeys and two shots of tequila. Witnesses later testify that Jordan appeared “very drunk,” stumbling and slurring, although he was still able to converse and walk on his own. Earlier that evening, Jordan had angrily texted his ex-girlfriend, Lena, accusing her of “ruining his career” by sharing a negative performance review. Lena ignored the messages. Jordan continued drinking heavily while telling friends he “should go over there and make her pay.” After leaving the bar, Jordan walked to Lena’s house, which was dark except for a small lamp in the living room. The front door was locked. Jordan muttered, “She can’t keep me out,” picked up a heavy garden rock, and smashed a window next to the door. He reached inside, unlocked the door, and entered. Once inside, Jordan tripped over a shoe and fell. Enraged, he began shouting Lena’s name. At that moment, Lena’s roommate Callie, awakened by the noise, came out of her bedroom and yelled, “Get out!” Startled, Jordan grabbed a fireplace poker near the kitchen and swung it at Callie. The poker struck her forearm, leaving a deep bruise and causing a hairline fracture. Callie screamed and tried to run. Jordan raised the poker again and shouted, “I’ll kill you if you don’t shut up!” He swung toward Callie’s head. Callie ducked, and the poker smashed into the wall inches from her skull. She managed to flee out the back door and call the police. Hearing sirens approaching, Jordan dropped the poker and staggered into Lena’s room. Finding no one there, he crawled onto Lena’s bed, muttering, “She needs to learn.” Officers entered minutes later and found Jordan curled up, crying and smelling strongly of alcohol. He was arrested without incident. Discuss all possible crimes that Jordan can be charged with and discuss all defenses.
