The sperm moves through water to reach the egg inside the [archegonium2]. Once there, the sperm fuses with the egg (fertilization) to produce the first cell of the diploid generation, the [zygote]. The zygote divides by mitosis to produce the [diploid], multicellular [sporophyte]. Once mature, the sporophyte grows the [sporangium]. The [sporangium2] is an organ of the sporophyte where [meiosis] happens to produce the [haploidspores], which are the first cell of the [gametophyte2] generation.
