Building Supporting Details Before students write an outline, they should read about the topic and collect major and minor details. Create an outline about a neglectful parent. Pretend you know someone who is a neglectful parent. Following this format, write an outline in the box below. You should write a thesis statement (skip the background information) that has two reasons why you think that parent is neglectful. Begin your body paragraph with the first major sup. detail (first reason), a few minor details (examples), and write the effects on the child(ren). Then, introduce the second major sup. detail with minor sup. details and effects. Finally, in one sentence, write your conclusion. Minor supporting details can be stated in phrases, not sentences. Here is the excerpt about neglectful parents from the passage. Do NOT copy from it. Neglectful (or Uninvolved) parenting is distinguished by a lack of parental involvement in the child’s life. Children of neglectful parents might develop a sense that other aspects of their parents’ lives are more important than they are. In a situation where the school sends home information about activities, the Uninvolved parents probably won't even look at the sheet. They don't ask the child if he/she wants to do an activity or pay attention enough to notice the child's need to do it. If the child decides to do the activity, the parents don't make sure the child has the supplies or transportation to get home. Either the child can't keep it up, or someone else steps in to provide these things. If someone does take on those parental responsibilities, the child might bond to them and view them as a role model, whether that's a good idea or not. Children whose parents are neglectful tend to be less competent socially, to handle independence poorly, and (especially) to show poor self-control.
