QUESTION #1: (40 pоints). Pleаse reаd the infоrmаtiоn below, and then respond to questions A, B, and C. At a recent UF basketball game, you ran into Roger Jamison, one of your best friends in high school. Roger was one of the brightest people you had ever met. After high school, he attended MIT, where he had a full academic scholarship and received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering. He was immediately hired by one of the top engineering firms in Jacksonville, and has been working for the firm for the past 6 years. In your conversation with him, he indicated that during his time in the company he had received recognition for his technical expertise, and that he had served as the “point person” on the development of several pieces of engineering equipment that the company patented. Although it was obvious from your conversation with Roger that he was pretty successful in his job, the more you talked with him, the more you realized that he was frustrated with his work situation. When you asked him why he felt that way, he said that the main problem he was having was that he simply wasn’t advancing in the company as quickly as he had expected, and that he felt his compensation was lagging behind that of his peers. He went on to say that the peers who were being promoted to supervisory positions instead of him (as well as those who were receiving higher salary increases) were clearly not as technically knowledgeable as he was, and that many of them seemed to focus more attention on what Roger called “extraneous things” that were not related to their engineering jobs. As he continued to talk, you begin to think about how organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs) might help explain the situation that Roger was describing to you. What are organizational citizenship behaviors, and how does Dennis Organ say these behaviors differ from what we typically think of as employee task performance? (Please define what OCBs are, explain how they differ from task performance, and describe the various types of citizenship behaviors). Is there any evidence to suggest that managers value OCBs in their evaluations of employees? If so, what would explain this apparently irrational behavior on the managers’ part? (Please provide as much concrete evidence you can muster to answer this question.) In their article entitled “HRM and Service Fairness,” Bowen, Gilliland, and Folger argue that employees’ perceptions of justice are key determinants of employees’ organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). What are the various types of justice discussed by these authors and how might these forms of justice explain why Roger feels the way he does in this situation? What can organizations (or leaders) specifically do to create employees’ perceptions of fairness in terms of promotion and compensation decisions?
