At a recent UF basketball game, you ran into Roger Jamison, one of your best friends in high school. Roger was one of the brightest people you had ever met. After high school, he attended MIT, where he had a full academic scholarship and received his undergraduate degree in mechanical engineering. He was immediately hired by one of the top engineering firms in Jacksonville, and has been working for the firm for the past 6 years. In your conversation with him, he indicated that during his time in the company he had received recognition for his technical expertise, and that he had served as the “point person” on the development of several pieces of engineering equipment that the company patented. Although it was obvious from your conversation with Roger that he was pretty successful in his job, the more you talked with him, the more you realized that he was frustrated with his work situation. When you asked him why he felt that way, he said that the main problem he was having was that he simply wasn’t advancing in the company as quickly as he had expected, and that he felt his compensation was lagging behind that of his peers.
