QUESTION #3: (20 pоints). Pleаse indicаte in yоur аnswer where yоu are addressing each part (Part A or Part B) of the question.  A few years after completing the UF OEM Program, you are working for Microsoft Corporation’s R&D Laboratory in Cambridge, Massachusetts as a project manager. You really enjoy the job because it offers you a chance to work with some of the “best and brightest” people you have ever met on some of the newest developments in the industry. Although you were originally hired as a first-line supervisor, you quickly moved beyond being a boss based on your “position” by developing strong and effective relationships with the people who report to you and gaining their trust. Recently, your boss asked you to come to her office for your semi-annual performance review. As part of that discussion, she informed you that you are one of three people in the organization being considered for a promotion into a middle management position, and that a critical part of the selection process is going to be a structured panel interview with three of the senior managers in the company. She went on to say that she thinks it is a great opportunity for you, and that all the candidates are being told that there are two critical questions that each candidate was going to be asked to address in the interview. The first question relates to the important lessons that you have learned in your current leadership position that you feel have prepared you for the promotion, and the specific changes you feel that you are going to have to make to be successful in the senior supervisor position. She also notes that the reason that this question is important is that the senior managers want to know whether the candidates have a sense of what will be expected of him/her in the new leadership position. The second question relates to one of the problems that seem to plague the high-tech, computer industry, and other industries where intellectual capital is important. That is, how the candidate plans to evaluate the performance of computer scientists and other “knowledge workers” in high-tech jobs. She goes on to say that there are two reasons why the senior managers are concerned about this issue. The first reason is that, because many of the jobs that are critical to the success of the firm are based on a person’s intellectual capital (rather than on the number of products they produce or sell), it is important for the new leader to have a good sense of how (s)he is going to assess the performance of people in these jobs. The second reason is because, even though the senior managers know that some of the knowledge workers in the firm perform their jobs “better” than the other knowledge workers, they are having a difficult time identifying the specific factors that account for these differences. So, they want to get the candidate’s views on how they can improve the evaluations of the computer scientists in the company. In answering the first part of the question, please include a discussion of what Maxwell says are the beliefs that help leaders prepare for moving from Level 2 to Level 3; the specific behaviors that leaders need to exhibit to be effective at Level 3, and some of the downsides of Level 3 leadership, and how you plan to deal with them. When addressing the second part of the question (the issue of how to assess the performance of employees in the high-tech industry), please discuss the implications of Kelley and Caplan’s research regarding the keys to success for computer scientists and other knowledge workers at Bell Labs. (Hints: what are the specific “work strategies” that these researchers found that distinguishes “star performers” from “middle performers”?)
