Sitting аtоp the highest pоint in оld Jerusаlem, the Dome of the Rock’s golden-color Dome аnd Turkish ceramic tiles dominates the cityscape of Old Jerusalem and served as a testament to the power of the new faith of Islam. The Dome of the Rock is one of the earliest surviving buildings from the Islamic world. At the center of the Dome of the Rock sits a large rock, which is believed to be the location where Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his son Isaac. Today, Muslims believe that the Rock commemorates the night journey of Muhammad. One night the Angel Gabriel came to Muhammad while he slept near the Kaaba in Mecca and took him to the farthest mosque in Jerusalem. From the Rock, Muhammad journeyed to heaven, where he met other prophets, such as Moses and Christ, witnessed paradise and hell, and finally saw God enthroned and surrounded by angels. The colonnades are adorned with exceptional mosaics. Golden mosaics depicting jewels shimmer in this glittering light. The mosaics in the Dome of the Rock contain no human figures or animals. Instead, we see vegetative scrolls and motifs. Byzantine and Sasanian crowns in the midst of vegetal motifs are also visible. Thus, the iconography of the Dome of the Rock also includes the other major civilizations of the region, which the Arab armies had defeated. QUESTIONS: 1. Sоurce: The Itinerаry оf Benjаmin оf Tudelа by Rabbi Benjamin of Tudela After a five days' journey the great town of Constantinople is reached. It is the capital of the whole land which is called Greece. The circumference of the city of Constantinople is eighteen miles; half of it is surrounded by the sea, and half by land. It is a busy city, and merchants come to it from every country by sea or land, and there is none like it in the world except Bagdad, the great city of Islam. In Constantinople is the church of Santa Sophia (Hagia Sophia), and the seat of the Pope of the Greeks, since the Greeks do not obey the Pope of Rome... And in this church there are pillars of gold and silver, and lamps of silver and gold more than a man can count. Close to the walls of the palace is also a place of amusement belonging to the king, which is called the Hippodrome, and every year on the anniversary of the birth of Jesus the king gives a great entertainment there. And in that place men from all the races of the world come before the king and queen and they introduce lions, leopards, bears, and wild asses, and they engage them in combat with one another. No entertainment like this is to be found in any other land. The Greek inhabitants are very rich in gold and precious stones, and they go clothed in garments of silk with gold embroidery, and they ride horses, and look like princes. Wealth like that of Constantinople is not to be found in the whole world. 1. How does Benjamin of Tudela describe the city of Constantinople? 2.
