As yоu hаve leаrned in this cоurse, R&B plаyed a significant rоle in the development of rock. Write an essay in which you address all of the following points: -Consider R&B in the late 1940s and early 1950s. What defined rhythm and blues? Keep in mind that this answer might involve cultural and social considerations rather than purely musical ones. -Was Rhythm and Blues one specific sound, or did it encompass multiple sounds? Describe some of the differences if applicable. -Some say that rock and roll was technically rhythm and blues with certain changes. Describe any differences between R&B and what became known as rock and roll starting around 1955. Again, consider social and cultural factors in America at the time in addition to any musical observations. Who were some notable R&B artists that became trend setters of rock and roll? -Starting in the early 1960s and continuing throughout the decade, two specific styles of R&B emerged. Describe the history of each and unique sound using the elements of music. -We did not discuss this much in class, but I would like your take on R&B music of the 1970s. Based on any previous knowledge you have and anything you might have learned throughout the course, can you talk about funk, disco, the Philidelphia sound, and the heightened political messages that took over R&B and reggae? Again, I will not grade this portion as strictly since we didn't go over these ideas in class, but I would like to see what you know.
