Along with outrigger canoes, Polynesians relied on a sophisticated navigation system based on observations of the stars, ocean currents, and the flight patterns of birds. Those settlers who came to Australia encountered a difficult set of environments, including widespread arid (dry) zones. Few plant or animal species in Australia could be domesticated, but the continent did have some large animals that could be hunted. For that reason, most of the communities of Australia remained primarily foragers (hunters and gatherers). Polynesians were able to domesticate plants and animals and transport them to islands where there were none. This allowed Polynesians to establish stable, permanent communities throughout the islands of the South Pacific.
