Generаl Directiоns:   The purpоses оf this exаm аre to demonstrate your skill at independent, critical reading, writing a timed essay on a prompt related to that reading, developing a claim that integrates information drawn from the reading, and documenting your sources using MLA style.   Use your assigned readings to integrate direct quotes, paraphrases, or summaries of the sources into your response. No other sources are permitted. You have 2 hours to complete this exam.   Use at least TWO of the assigned readings (which you may quote, paraphrase, or summarize) to develop your claim. You may use personal experience. Take care to integrate your sources into your essay effectively, and to document your use of all sources in appropriate MLA format. You do not need to include a Works Cited list.   This is a formal essay. You should have an intro, a thesis statement, support (three body paragraphs), and a conclusion.   When you have completed the exam, please bring it to the instructor with this prompt.   Assigned Sources (all found on Canvas): “Americans and the Land” by John Steinbeck “Fire” by Joy Harjo “An Apology to Future Generations” by Simon Benlow “Louisiana, Sinking Fast, Prepares to Empty Out Its Coastal Plain” by Christopher Flavelle     Respond on looseleaf to ONE of the following questions:   1) Consider the extent to which individuals and the natural world are linked and/or separated. Drawing on your own personal experience and at least two of the assigned readings, is society's current relationship with the environment a net positive or net negative? Why or why not? Organize your thesis to establish a clear claim regarding the relationship between the individual and nature. Be sure to discuss at least two of the assigned readings in developing your claim. Take care to integrate those sources into your essay effectively, and document your use of the readings in appropriate MLA format. You do not need to include a Works Cited list.   2. Each of the assigned readings discusses in some way humanity’s relationship with nature, and that relationship suggests a responsibility of the general public toward the environment. Yet our responsibilities toward the natural environment are challenged by many practical needs: our needs for inexpensive fuels, for plentiful food, for travel and recreation, and so on. Write an essay establishing your own claim concerning how the public can achieve a balance between its responsibilities toward the environment and its practical needs. Use at least two of the assigned readings (which you may quote) to develop your claim. Take care to integrate those sources into your essay effectively, and document your use of the readings in appropriate MLA format. You do not need to include a Works Cited list.
