Extrа Credit. The fоllоwing is аn exаmple оf close reading analysis of Campbell McGrath’s poem “Section XI” (757). What is the correct assessment of this close reading analysis? I argue that Campbell McGrath’s “Section XI” is about colonial voyages. When the speaker says, “my library slips its anchor and sails” (line 4), the library symbolizes the knowledge that Europeans brought to America. This journey is imagined as a majestic voyage to save the heathen savages of the Americas because the speaker adds that the library sails “ever more certainly into the past” (line 5). The way that the colonial expeditions sail “ever more certainly into the past” demonstrates how the indigenous people were living in a prehistoric society.
