Submit your exam through the designated platform or to your instructor as directed.  --- Essay Prompts (Choose ONE): ENGLISH 101: DEPARTMENTAL ESSAY (MINI-TERM I) Please write a five-paragraph essay on ONE of the following topics.   Reflect on a time when you failed at something at first but continued trying until you improved or succeeded.  Instructions: Describe the situation and what went wrong initially. What made you decide to keep going instead of giving up? Focus on your thoughts, actions, and how the experience changed over time. Be sure to make a clear claim about what this experience shows about perseverance and how it has influenced the way you respond to challenges now.    Describe a place that is important in your community.  Instructions: Explain why this place matters to the community. What happens there? Who uses it, and for what purposes? Conclude with a clear thesis about what this place reveals about the values, needs, or identity of your community. Focus on clear, vivid description of the place itself: its appearance, atmosphere, sounds, activity, and details that make it recognizable. Help your reader see and experience the place through specific sensory details.    Compare the value of working independently with the value of working as part of a group.  Instructions: Make a clear argument about which is more effective overall—or under what conditions each works best. Explain the strengths and challenges of both approaches using specific examples from your experiences in school, work, or other settings. What kinds of tasks or situations work better for each? Analyze the trade-offs between independence and collaboration.     Argue whether or not stores and restaurants have the right to refuse service to customers who are rude or disrespectful.  Instructions: Take a clear position and argue whether businesses should be allowed to deny service based on customer behavior. Support your argument with specific examples from your own experience or observation. Address at least one counterargument before concluding. Your thesis should clearly state your position.    Evaluate a piece of advice you have been given more than once. Is it actually good advice?  Instructions: Clearly explain the advice and the situations in which you’ve heard or used it. Then evaluate it based on your own experiences—when did it work, and when did it not? Conclude with a clear judgment about whether the advice is truly helpful, limited, or even misleading, and explain why.    Reminder of Essay Structure: THESIS PARAGRAPH JOBS:  Raise the subject naturally (2-3 sentences) Set the scene and give background (2-3 sentences) State your clear and direct response to the prompt (One sentence) Preview the examples you will use (3+ sentences) Get the reader ready for your first example (one sentence) BODY PARAGRAPH JOBS (x3): 1)   Create a topic sentence that tells exactly what the paragraph will be about, connects to the thesis, and uses transitional words or phrases. (These jobs may be in any order that makes sense grammatically).  2)   Give 9 or more sentences of detail supporting the topic sentence (three major details with three minor details each) 3)   Use transitional words when you shift to a new major detail 4)   Offer a concluding sentence that explains the importance of what you have said so far. CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH JOBS: 1)   Summarize and assess how your examples work together (3+ sentences) 2)   Explain how you have proved your point/what you have learned and Restate your thesis from a place of more confidence (1-2 sentences) 3)   Explain what is at stake if someone does not learn from your experience/explain how this taught you something (3+ sentences) 4)   Give your reader advice/tell the reader what to do or think next (2-3 sentences)
