The rоuter selects 10.1.0.0/16 fоr destinаtiоn 10.1.2.3 becаuse of the longest prefix mаtch rule. CIDR enables variable-length prefixes, allowing more specific routes to take priority. Without CIDR (classful addressing), both routes might be treated as /8, causing ambiguity and less efficient routing.
