Dr. Strаnge, the ER physiciаn whо exаmined and treated Sarah Jane, had been very busy оn the day Sarah came tо the ER. She’d been at the hospital for 7 hours by the time she saw Sarah and was tired and hungry. The intake nurse had noted on Sarah’s chart that the area around the incision was tender and smelled “not so great” (an understatement) AND that Sarah was experiencing extreme pain in her abdomen that wasn’t very close to the incision site and so was therefore unlikely to be related to the incision. When Dr. Strange assessed Sarah, she forgot to ask about the abdominal pain and discharged Sarah after treating her for the incision infection. When Sarah got home, the pain in her abdomen worsened and as she was preparing to go back to the TGH ER she collapsed to the floor. Her hyper-intelligent and dexterous dog, Snapper, called 911 and barked out a request for an ambulance in Morse code. When they arrived at Sarah’s house, the paramedics found Sarah sitting in a chair, conscious, but still in great pain. They believed she had an appendix that was about to burst. Once they had Sarah in the ambulance, they called their dispatcher at TGH (which also owned the ambulance) who told the paramedics to take Sarah to a different hospital—Regional Healthcare Center (RHC)— that was a little farther but was more likely to have the specialists needed at that time. Sarah was transported to RHC, which was able to provide surgery in time and Sarah eventually fully recovered. The federal government got wind of these events and decided to bring a civil lawsuit against TGH for multiple violations of EMTALA (and as a hospital with an ER that accepts Medicare patients, TGH must comply with this statute).
