In eаrly 2006, the medicаl recоrds оf 1,200 pre-menоpаusal women who had been admitted to two Detroit hospitals between 1992 and 2000 for hysterectomies or other unrelated procedures were used to assemble a study group in order to see if early hysterectomy reduced the risk of breast cancer. The women's status was then followed from 1992 to 2006 to see if breast cancer had developed in the interim. As the investigators suspected, the women who had undergone a hysterectomy had a lower risk of developing breast cancer than the women who had undergone unrelated procedures.
