Reflect оn whаt yоu've leаrned thrоughout this course. Unit 1 wаs about the processes of urbanization, habitats, and accounting (energy, metabolism, footprint, services). Unit 2 was about the climate and cycles (temperature, water, carbon, nitrogen). Unit 3 was about urban biodiversity and impacts on species, populations, and communities. And throughout we talked about the social justice implications for humans. Taking all of this into account, do you find yourself leaving this class with a more optimistic (positive) or pessimistic (negative) outlook regarding the future of urban ecosystems? There is no "correct" answer as long as you thoughtfully respond to the questions below. 1. State your position clearly (optimistic or pessimistic) and provide 3 reasons for your outlook, linking your answer to specific things we've learned in the course. (4) 2. Provide a "counter-point" by briefly discussing one piece of evidence from the course that contradicts your outlook (optimistic or pessimistic). (2)
As аn urbаn plаnner fоr the city оf Austin, yоu are tasked with managing a small 5-acre urban park that has become isolated from a nearby 500-acre nature preserve. Monitoring data shows that the species richness in the small urban park is declining. Furthermore, the average temperature in the urban park and surrounding area is 3.5 degrees C higher than in the preserve. The city council suggests two competing strategies to improve the park's ecological health: Strategy A: Purchase and clear 2 acres of abandoned buildings next to the park. Then restore the habitat to expand the park to 7 acres. Strategy B: Plant a continuous line of native trees and small corner gardens along the 2-mile road that connects the preserve to the park. 1. Explain how each strategy could help increase the species richness of the park. Be sure to use specific terms when possible. (4) 2. If the city chose Strategy B, give TWO aspects of the surface energy equation (the one with QI, QS, etc.) would be impacted and explain how. (4) 3. Give one example of an ecosystem disservice that the city should take into account if it chooses Strategy B. (2)
