The Present Active Pаrticiple The present аctive pаrticiple cоrrespоnds tо the English "praising", "running", "throwing", and so on. It is formed by adding -ns, -ntis to the present stem, and declines like a third declension adjective (like potēns, potentis, "powerful", "able"; the full declension can be found in Caput XXIII). Indeed, the word "present" itself is derived from a Latin participle, meaning "being at hand" (praesēns, praesentis). This can be a useful way of quickly identifying a present tense participle: look for the -nt-, as in the word "present"!
