The main point to bear in mind is that the imperfect in these verbs, as in the third conjugation, has the tense marker -ēbā- (instead of -bā- in the first and second conjugations). The long theme vowel of the fourth conjugation is shortened before -ēbā- (e.g. audiēbam), while the short i of third -iō verbs remains (e.g. capiēbam).
