True оr fаlse: "vоice" in а verb indicаtes whether the subject оf the verb is doing its action (="active", e.g. "I throw") or the action is being done to the subject (="passive", e.g. "I am thrown").

Tense, mооd, vоice In this quiz so fаr, we hаve looked аt the formation and conjugation of the present indicative active verb in verbs like laudō, laudāre and moneō, monēre. These three designations -- present, indicative, active -- relate to different characteristics of the verb: "present" designates the verb's tense; "indicative" designates the mood; and "active" is an indication of its voice. There are six different tenses in Latin: present, imperfect, future, perfect, pluperfect, and future perfect. In this course, we will eventually look at all six of these, but our focus in this quiz is on the present tense: The present tense is used to indicate actions that occur at the same time as the utterance: if I say "I am running", then I am doing the action of "running" at the same time as I am speaking. In English we can generally translate this using either the "simple" present, indicating momentary or single action, e.g. "I praise" or "she warns", or we can translate using the "progressive" present, indicating events that express duration, repetition, or are continuous, e.g. "we are warning", "they are praising". There are three moods in Latin: the indicative, the imperative, and the subjunctive. Mood can be described as the speaker's attitude towards their utterance: If the indicative mood is used, it indicates the objective, actual occurrence of an action: there is no question or doubt that the action is occurring (in the present), has occurred (in past tenses), or will occur (in future tenses). By contrast, the subjunctive mood can suggest a variety of subjective understandings of the action, such as potential, desired, conditional, or real events. We will not look at the subjunctive in this course (although it is an important part of the next class in this sequence!). The imperative mood designates commands. There are generally two categories of voice in Latin: active and passive: The active voice indicates that the subject of the verb is the same as the person(s) or thing(s) doing the action of the verb. By contrast, the passive voice indicates that the subject of verb is having the action of the verb done to it! Compare the following phrases, for example: "I praise" (active) and "I am praised" (passive); "you are warning" (active) and "you are being warned" (passive).
