Remember: This is а rоugh drаft аnd will need revisiоn tо reach all the goals listed below.  Consider this exercise a chance to get all of your ideas down on the page which will put you in a great position to reorganize and revise your main ideas for your final draft. Purpose: This essay’s aim is cultural critique. By culture, we are referring to American culture and Americanness (however you may define that), and by critique, this assignment refers to analysis or critical judgement. You have chosen a specific text (music video or commercial) that addresses notions of America/Americanness directly and you will make a claim about how those notions are developed through a combination of word and image, how that reflects certain cultural understandings of America and Americanness, and the significance of that connection. Description: Using class discussions, quizzes and optional office hours meetings with me as guides, identify and describe the definition of American or Americanness offered by your chosen text.  Then, consider the following questions:  What specific aspect(s) of Americanness does my text touch on that I want to focus on?  Why is this significant to American culture at large? Where does this specific claim lead me to direct my research?  How can my argument and research help me start to make connections to larger issues of identity in American culture and my own life? We are asking “so what”: why does the specific aspect of Americanness you have chosen to analyze help us understand the text, identity, and how they are reflected in American culture in a new or interesting way?   Logistics: Focus on how the text constructs America or Americanness Use this idea to make supported claims about the themes of the text and consider how they are reflected in larger cultural norms through analysis; Include an abundance of direct evidence (quotes, paraphrase, summary) from the text and secondary sources with MLA citations; 1500-2000 words, not including works cited; MLA formatting (header, page numbers, Times New Roman 12); Submitted as a google doc link with editing permissions enabled by the deadline Evaluation: Contains a sustained analysis of the Americanness within the chosen text; Makes an original argument about how it helps us understand the text and American culture in a less obvious way; Makes use of creative analytical readings of the primary and secondary texts with MLA citations; Considers the connotations of words and phrases, the way time, space, and perspective work, interaction between word and image, etc; Avoids merely restating the major themes or plot points of the primary text; Makes clear connections between central argument and secondary critical texts with MLA citations. Secondary texts are well-integrated into the essay both in terms of style and argument; Engages in the existing scholarly discourse while asserting a strong central argument that maintains the primacy of the author’s voice; Reflects the human voice of the author with unique and creative approaches to the material, thoughtful contributions to the scholarly discussion, and curiosity about the subject matter; Meets word count and formatting requirements; Is generally free of errors and has an organized and clear structure.
