Social issues are questions of public importance where there are conflicting views, intense debates, and very different solutions proposed. Choose ONE of the topics below and write a formal essay addressing the required elements. Your response must include a title, an introductory paragraph (with a clear thesis statement), structured body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Topic Options (Choose ONE): Breastfeeding vs. Formula Feeding (Pressures, corporate influence, and public stigma) Organ Transplants and the Ethics of Selling Organs Medical Research Ethics (e.g., genetic editing, clinical trials) Euthanasia / Medical Assistance in Dying (MAID) The Social Effects of Technology (Positive vs. negative impacts on human connection) Teenage Risky Behaviour in the Digital Age Universal Healthcare access for smokers, drinkers, drug addicts, and the obese Depression in the elderly and in the modern workplace The Social and Cultural Impacts of Globalization Evolving Crime Rates and Criminal Justice in Canada Poverty cycles affecting women, children, or Indigenous communities Essay Requirements & Mark Breakdown (20 Marks Total) Your essay must thoroughly address the following six sections. Use paragraph breaks to separate your ideas clearly. 1. Introduction & Definition (3 Marks): Give your essay a title. Define the social issue clearly. What makes this a public concern rather than just a private trouble? State your clear thesis (your stance) at the end of this paragraph. 2. Historical Context vs. Present Day (3 Marks): How was this issue viewed or handled in the past, and how has it evolved to where it stands today in 2026? What major social shifts changed this issue over time? 3. Conflicting Viewpoints & Evidence (6 Marks): Examine at least two distinct, opposing perspectives on this debate. For each viewpoint, provide the primary arguments and evidence (sociological, psychological, or anthropological reasons) that supporters use to defend their stance. 4. Social Science Connection (3 Marks): Explicitly connect this issue to one major school of thought or theory studied in this course (e.g., Conflict Theory, Structural Functionalism, Feminist Theory, or Cultural Lag). How does this theory help explain why the conflict exists? 5. Your Stance & Justification (3 Marks): Take a definitive stand on the issue. Support your opinion using objective facts, examples, or ethical reasoning rather than just personal feelings. 6. Future Outlook & Conclusion (2 Marks): Where do you see this issue heading over the next decade? Will it improve or worsen? Conclude by stating what concrete actions Canadian society or institutions should take to help manage or resolve this issue.
