A 54-yeаr-оld mаle visits his physiciаn with cоmplaints оf fatigue and weakness. He reports previously having a healthy appetite but that recently he's been feeling full in his abdomen, making eating uncomfortable. Upon physical examination, the physician finds that the patient’s spleen is enlarged. The patient reports no history of blunt contact to the abdomen that would cause such enlargement. The physician orders laboratory work. The most striking results are anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia. The results also indicate that lymphocytes with abnormal morphology are within the peripheral blood. The lymphocytes are identified as having cytoplasmic projections. The physician is concerned that the patient may have a leukemia, which commonly presents with the classic triad of anemia, leukopenia, and thrombocytopenia. Based on the patient’s age and gender, which of the leukemias is most likely?
