In this video, the speаker argues that the information Jonathan Haidt used for drawing his conclusions about the relationship between between social media and mental health are not strong. The studies are either old, have problems with the way the data was collected, or have drawn conclusions based on a different group of people (adults and not youth).  Yet, Professor Haidt's research has drawn a lot of media attention and the attention of the government, which is now considering bans on social media for youth.  In your opinion, should we trust the research conducted by Dr. Haidt?  Why or why not?  

Cоurse Intrоductiоn Lаw pervаdes аll areas of modern life. Yet it remains mysterious to those without legal training. This mini-course will introduce you to the tools that lawyers use to interpret and apply the law. Students will learn to think like lawyers through a series of contemporary case studies that require reading, writing, thinking, and problem solving like a lawyer. By the end of this mini-course, students will be able to: Read like a lawyer by reading and briefing legal cases and recognizing and discussing basic legal terminology. Write like a lawyer by producing written legal analysis of complex fact patterns as is regularly required of all students in law school. Think like a lawyer by problem solving with the tools of legal reasoning, and communicating clear and concise legal arguments, including stating the relevant issue; identifying, and explaining the relevant rule or doctrine; applying the rule or doctrine to relevant facts; and reaching a conclusion. This course has five assignments. You will complete the first four assignments remotely, through a Canvas Quiz interface.  Each assignment should take you roughly two hours to complete, and will require you to complete readings, watch short videos, complete written exercises or answer objective questions .  Assignment 1: Basic Legal Reasoning (this Assignment) Assignment 2: Assault and Battery Assignment 3: Offensive Battery and Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress Assignment 4: Defenses: Consent and self-defense You will schedule a time to complete the fifth and final assignment at the University of Minnesota Law School, which is on the West Bank campus in Walter F. Mondale Hall. Final Assignment: The final assignment will be conducted in person. This assignment will include both a multiple choice component and a component requiring you to write a legal analysis of a torts fact pattern.   HonorLock You will complete all five assignments with HonorLock enabled. The purpose of enabling HonorLock is to allow the researchers to observe how you engage with the materials. AI Usage You are not permitted to use artificial intelligence, including ChatGPT, Claude, or Gemini, to complete any portion of the assignments. You many not upload any of the materials to artificial intelligence. Use of artificial intelligence jeopardizes the findings of the study.  If you are discovered to have used artificial intelligence, you will not receive compensation for your participation in this study.
