Recent police statistics show that nearly 90 percent of all burglar alarms are false, resulting in yearly dispatch costs of over 10 million dollars in one urban area. Because of this and the need to conserve resources, a large urban police department recently enacted a policy by which a burglar alarm must be verified before dispatchers send an officer to the scene. This is typically done by the alarm company or someone physically present in the area. Government buildings and banks, as well as robbery and panic alarms are exempt from this policy. Alarm companies, businesses and residents have complained that this new policy will make them attractive targets for burglars who will not feel threatened by an immediate police presence. Furthermore, alarm companies think the new policy is unwarranted because false alarm fees produce more than $2.6 million in city revenue every year, and alarm-permit fees generate an additional $3.2 million for city coffers.
