Most people think the GPS (Global Positioning System) was developed for commercial aircraft, trains and automobiles, when in fact it was originally invented by the military as a navigation system.  It consists of a constellation of 27 earth-orbiting satellites, 24 of which are in operation and 3 additional in case one fails.  They are solar powered and weigh between 3,000 and 4,000 pounds each.  They circle the earth at 12,000 miles twice a day, and their orbits are organized so that any time, anywhere on earth, there are at least four satellites visible in the sky.  The job of the GPS receiver is to locate four or more of these satellites, determine the distance to each and deduce its own location.  It does this by timing the GPS signal’s journey from satellite to receiver.  At a particular time the satellite begins to transmit a digital pattern called a pseudo-random code and the receiver transmits the same pattern at the same time.  The satellite’s signal lags a bit behind the receiver’s playing of the pattern.  The length of the delay is equal to the signal’s travel time.
